The Eagle Has Landed is pretty good. Shows the Fallschirmjäger as being honourable men willing to risk their lives to protect innocents and give their Colonel a chance to take out one of the most evil men who lived in the twentieth century.
On the other end of the spectrum there's Allo Allo. They do make a lot of jokes about the Germans, but they're mostly in good fun rather than seriously demonising them, plus they make all the same jokes about the French and English so it works out.
It's really interesting to watch in that it's still considered socially acceptable but it absolutely couldn't be made today since it covers the holy war without any righteous condemnation of the evil side.
Well, "das Boot" is basically a German pre-woke-era film based on an autobiography. So, yes, it's neutral. And yes, just thinking about "Fury" makes my blood boil. Utterly disgusting jewish revenge fantasies molded into a film.
I have to disagree somewhat. Das Boot was written by a cynical anti war type and doesn't represent the mood on the Uboats at all. A great overview with lots of emotion is Wolfgang Frank "Die Wölfe und der Admiral".
The only good thing about this movie was the end scene when the honorable SS soldier finds the frightened tanker cowering under his tank, recognizes his defeat, and leaves him be. It was indicative of how the entire SS operated through the war. With honor and compassion.
…my aunt told me a story that when Germans were retreating from their village Velke Levare (near capital Bratislava, Slovakia) they told the parents to hide any jewelry, watches and daughters because the Russian front was coming through. The first line of “defense” of Red Army was rifraf from gulags in Siberia promised to get freedom if they fight in the war (murderers, rapists, thieves in majority amongst them). When Russians came they were asking if they have watches and young daughters. The parents said they were poor and had nothing. Russians took over their house squeezing the family in one small room while they’d sleep in their bedroom. Them being really uncivilized and constantly drunk peed in the corner of the bedroom instead using the toilet (I had to believe my aunt saying that they never saw the toilet before and didn’t know what’s it for). After the was they had to scrape the paint to the brick and redo the walls it was so disgusting. She was a baby but her older sister (13 at the time of war) told her everything and that’s how she remembered and told me. Her sister was was hiding for the most of the nights in a pigsty for one week before they left. Most of the time they were drunk and that “helped” her not to be raped.
She said when Germans came they gave kids chocolate and were civilized.
My grandma (Ruskovce on the East part of the country bordering with Russia (now Ukraine) told me a story that Russians wanted to take their cow, she pleaded she needs it for the family and a baby (my dad was born in September 1943) and don’t remember the details but my grandma’s brother shot a Russian officer but don’t know the reason, might have been related to his unit stealing from people (?). Then he had to hide and fled to Austria and then to Canada/USA where he had died in early 60s.
