Was George Michael Jewish?
George Michael - the famously homosexual British pop star - died of alleged ‘heart complications’ on Christmas Day 2016. The alleged ‘heart complications’ seem to be linked to Michael’s secret heroin addiction, (1) which - although his family and friends have been denying it till the present by shouting as loudly as possible - (2) is almost certainly the true state of affairs. Since he had long battled an addiction to illegal drugs and his death was by all accounts both unexpected and rather sudden. (3)
It also turns out that George Michael - born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in June 1963 - had a jewish mother. Since his grandmother was jewish, but hid her jewish heritage during the Second World War for obvious and understandable reasons. (4)
Since jewishness is generally passed along the maternal line; this would render George Michael both jewish halakhically (i.e., in jewish religious law) and according to the Israeli right of return.
Therefore George Michael was indeed jewish.
