Sir Phillip Green - the man who destroyed the once mighty retail chain British Home Stores [hereafter BHS] - has been the news rather a lot in recent years. He has been defended on technicalities by his friends in the media such as the Spectator, (1) the Telegraph, (2) the Weekly Standard (3) and Forbes. (4)
I don’t see a call here to rebut what they have written other than to observe that whether it was Tina Green (Phillip Green’s wife) who owned and ran BHS. It was Phillip Green who bought BHS and it was he who got rid of it to Dominic Chappell.
Andrew Joyce has documented – using a wide variety of different sources – the fact Green has been a congenital con-artist since he first started out in business in 1979 when he conned customers into thinking used designer clothes were in fact new. (5) It therefore should surprise nobody when we read that Green left a £571 million black hole in BHS’ pension scheme and that this cash was moved by Green and/or his wife out of BHS for their own personal benefit. (6)
In addition, when Green’s Arcadia Group collapsed in November 2020; it also had a similarly large pension deficit of £510 million. (7)
Ruddick and Butler have documented how Green and his wife moved money around within their network of businesses in order to profit by transferring millions of pounds allocated to the pension fund out of BHS into other businesses that they owned. (8)
This left 11,000 British workers facing compulsory redundancy and 20,000 former employees suffering from significantly reduced pension payments through no fault of their own. (9) This highly charged and visceral situation also brought calls from both Members of Parliament and the former Chairman of Pension Protection Fund to force Green to directly compensate those his behaviour has directly harmed. (10)
Green in acts of particularly blatant chutzpah viciously attacking the committee investigating his conduct, (11) while saying he was ‘saddened’ about the collapse of BHS. (12) His religious confreres at the Jewish Chronicle immediately began jumping up and down accusing anyone who pointed out Green’s jewishness of being ‘anti-Semitic’. (13)
Oh but don’t mention that Green has been living a life of luxury ever since, because that would be ‘anti-Semitic’ now wouldn’t it? (14)
This tie to the jewish community is the key to much of how Green has acted as he has. He grew up as an Orthodox jew in East London among his co-religionists. His father educated him at Carmel College then the most expensive (and an exclusively jewish) school in the United Kingdom. It was also his father’s rather significant estate and his links to jewish businessmen and financiers that gave Green his start among the corporate sharks of this world. (15)
For example, in 2005 Green held a £5 million party [the Telegraph says £4 million] for his son’s Bar Mitzvah (i.e., coming of age as a jewish adult) and also donated the same sum again to the exclusively jewish charity ‘Jewish Care’. (16)
Green’s ‘Wealth-X’ profile suggests that he often gives to jewish religious causes. (17) This includes spending a lot of time in Israel and donating heavily to Israeli charities according to the Jerusalem Post. (18)
All this Judeocentric philanthropy was funded by Green’s defrauding of the UK taxpayer of a cool £300 million in 2006 among many other similar schemes. (19)
Remember what Bernie Madoff did with his ill-gotten gains?
That’s right: made frequent and large donations to jewish organizations.
The jewish culpability in Green’s economic crimes is neatly and with unintentional irony summarized best by the Jewish Chronicle.
To wit:
‘It is unfortunate that several of Sir Philip's associates are also prominent community members. Mike Sherwood of Goldman Sachs, another philanthropist, is described by MPs as the "gatekeeper" who effectively gave Sir Philip the go-ahead to sell BHS for one pound, even though GS received no fee. Lord (Tony) Grabiner QC, one of the country's most prominent jurists, faced severe criticism for governance failings.
Even though he was chairman of Sir Philip's top company Taveta Investments, collecting an annual fee of £110,000, Lord Grabiner was absent at the board meeting at which the BHS sale was agreed. Olswang, a prominent London legal firm with Jewish origins, is criticised for the size of its fee (taken out of BHS funds), its lack of co-operation with the Parliamentary probe and over the quality of its due diligence.’ (20)
In other words, Phillip Green’s dealings regarding the sale of BHS were… well… almost exclusively jewish and actively avoided dealing with non-jews where possible. This included angrily vetoing the sale of the business to non-jewish British multi-millionaire businessman Mike Ashley (21)
Contrast Green’s pally dealings with his fellow jews to his attitude to the non-jews who worked for him at BHS.
To quote Chris Page – a former employee of Green’s – he said the following to her face before having her sacked:
‘Do you know who I am? I own BHS, pay your wages, and own you.’ (22)
