Inspector Jules Maigret – the most famous creation of French novelist Georges Simenon – is one of the best-known literary creations in modern French literature alongside Maurice Leblanc’s ‘Arsène Lupin’ and in many ways is a French equivalent of Agatha Christie’s ‘Hercule Poirot’ (1) or Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ (2) both of whose novels frequently feature jews negatively and attack jews and jewishness in much the same way that similarly famous English novelist John Buchan’s ‘Richard Hannay’ novels did around the same time. (3)
Like Hannay, Holmes and Poirot as well as other similar fictional detectives of the times like Ernest William Hornung’s ‘Raffles’: (4) Simenon’s ‘Maigret’ novels show their protagonist as a foe of the jews and jewishness in general.
For example, in the first ‘Maigret’ novel; ‘Pietr the Latvian’ a vicious jewess is the mistress of the eponymous master criminal and acts viciously towards the French police arresting her.
The vicious insanity of the jews is a common theme in the ‘Maigret’ novels and stories where – for example - in ‘Maigret’s Secret’ – a jewish woman is depicted as being an insane hypochondriac wife who keeps bothering her French doctor to check on her Polish husband because she claims he is always ill but is just trying to get away from her all-pervasive insanity.
Similarly, in ‘Death Penalty’ Maigret describes a jewess named Sonia Lipschitz who was the mistress of a lot of different powerful and rich Frenchmen and further details how she extracted huge amounts of money from them which she then spent in less than two years.
While in ‘The Late Monsieur Gallet’ a jew named ‘Monsieur Jacobs’ is described as an archetypal jew with a prominent hooked nose who sells newspapers and will do just about anything for money and in ‘The Night at the Crossroads’ a jewish stolen jewel fence from Amsterdam – with a hooked nose, curly black hair and show clothes - named Jacob Goldberg is murdered along with his sister because he had gotten too greedy.
This theme of the nasty psychology and manipulative, narcissistic behaviour of the jews – which one can easily argue is referencing psychopathic personality traits – is a common one in the ‘Maigret’ novels with Simenon stating it is actually a racial trait not an acquired one.
Since we learn in ‘Pietr the Latvian’ that each race has its own distinctive smell in reference to the ‘Jewish Stench’ (aka the Foetor Judaicus) as well as finding it explicitly stated that jews are a race apart from Europeans and while further explaining about how they hide their jewishness from the world by cross-breeding with non-jews.
Simenon develops this theme further in ‘The Carter of La Providence’ by describing a man named Willy who is ‘of jewish appearance’ who is half-Hungarian (his mother) and half-Greek (his father) and whom is stated to be a serial seducer of women and a con-man who lives by his wits and refuses to go into an honest (i.e., non-jewish) business.
While in ‘The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien’ we are told of how a jew – whose father owned a sausage business and who is pleased to pretend to be German rather than a jew – is a racial alien to his group of French friends and just wants to see how poor non-jews behave so he can look down upon them.
In other words: Simenon’s Maigret is no friend to the jews, sees them as his racial enemies and as criminals and degenerates who are the foes of law and order in France.
