Tara McCarthy – an ostensibly ethno-nationalist vlogger who operated primarily on YouTube – quit after she was called to account after admitting that her maternal grandmother was half-Indian (1) and that the same relative’s mother was half-jewish. (2)
Now some people have defended her by saying she is only a tiny percentage jewish and thus is allegedly ‘okay’ and gets a metaphorical pass. The reality however is that while she would not count as jewish in Israeli law. The fact is that according to jewish religious law or halakha; she is quite likely to be recognised as jewish.
The reason for this is that McCarthy admitted that it was her maternal mother’s mother who was jewish, which means – as jewishness follows the line of the mother in Halakhah – that it is extremely likely she would be regarded as jewish by Orthodox jews just like the late author and controversialist Christopher Hitchens was.
So yes, Tara McCarthy is jewish.
