Is Alex Salmond Jewish?
I recently came across claims that a leading proponent of Scottish Independence from the United Kingdom - as well as former head and chief barking buffoon of the misleadingly-named Scottish National Party (which is actually a quasi-Marxist one-worlder party), (1) Alex Salmond is jewish or more correctly has jewish ancestry.
This argument - for which I have found but very few proponents - (2) is to be perfectly blunt rather crude as it claims that Salmond's (presumably paternal) family at some indeterminate point changed their surname from 'Saloman' to 'Salmond'.
Unfortunately as much as we might wish it to be true: there is absolutely no evidence of this name change in the records which have been studied back to the early fourteenth century. (3)
Now while the name 'Salmond' could be a corruption - or an attempt to change a jewish surname to a more gentile-sounding one (which of course is not uncommon historically) - of 'Saloman'. (4)
There is simply no historical evidence to support such a contention and that it is probably a bit of hyperbolic nonsense on the part of the proponents is suggested by the fact that they do not state when this name change occurred, do not point to the records that prove this to be so (as they are publicly available and can accessed from the internet: this should only require an internet connection and a bit of patience) and are generally short in the necessary specifics of making a claim of jewishness about an individual heretofore believed (rightly or wrongly) to be a gentile.
A sign of desperation among the proponents of this theory is the claim that 'Alexander' is one of the top ten jewish first names (5) for which no source is provided, but which seems to me - without looking it up - to be just silly given that 'Alexander' is a Greek/Macedonian derived name not a jewish one. I find it very hard to believe that it is up there with names like James, Dov, Lev, Eli, Joshua, Saul, Samuel, Nathan and the like.
How many jews with the first name 'Alexander': do you know of with googling it?
Not many I'll wager.
If Salmond knew he was part-jewish: then why would he not make political capital out of the fact as his opponent and former British Prime Minister David Cameron did in Israel, (6) while the similarly jewish then leader of the opposition Labour Party frequently did, (7) but yet when Salmond visits the jews in Scotland. He makes absolutely not mention of the fact, but rather contents himself with noting the 'long history' of Scottish jewry. (8)
If Salmond was jewish - or had any jewish ancestry - do you really think he wouldn't have made political capital out of that fact?
Of course: he would.
After all why hide it considering how powerful the jews are and how neutralized wider society is in regarding their influence as necessarily benign and something to be lauded rather than pilloried.
