Concerning Adolf Hitler’s Jewish Landlord
In 2017 German media sources reported with gusto the apparent discovery that the famous and much reviled leader of the country during the Second World War rented a house from a jew between 1920 and 1929.
To wit:
‘A German historian says Nazi leader Adolf Hitler lived for almost a decade in a house that belonged to a Jewish merchant.
Paul Hoser says Hitler lived at Thierschstrasse 41 in Munich’s Lehel district from 1920 till 1929, interrupted by a year spent at Landsberg prison for staging a failed coup in Bavaria.
Writing in the quarterly VfZ, Hoser says house was bought in 1921 by Hugo Erlanger. He lost the house in 1934, after falling behind on mortgage payments.
According to the research, Hitler treated his Jewish landlord “with courtesy” despite harbouring strong anti-Semitism that would later contribute to the Nazi’s murderous policy toward Jews.
Erlanger survived the war and was able to get his house back in 1949.
The research was first reported Saturday by Der Spiegel magazine.’ (1)
The point that the media is missing here is that this indicates that in spite of everything said about the man – and which we know from a vast array of primary sources such his boyhood friend August Kubizek, early NSDAP backer Fritz Thyssen and Goebbels’ diaries among others – is that he was extraordinarily polite in an old-fashioned almost Victorian way.
He didn’t go out of his way to insult, and attack jews in his personal life, praised ‘honest jews’ like Otto Weininger and also protected jews who had done right by him such as his old family doctor Eduard Bloch.
Knowing this and the now revealed fact that he also had a jewish landlord – which we may reasonably assume he was aware of – firmly places Hitler in the mould of a fierce but honourable German patriot. Who – as with people like Henry Ford with Dr. Oscar Levy – treated individual jews with dignity and would have greatly preferred that jews reform their ways and be normal citizens of the world rather than engaging in an eternal jihad against the ‘sub-human goyim’.
The reality is that, as much as I respect the men, both Ford and Hitler were hopeless romantics stuck in a more chivalric and honourable age and did not recognise the brutal new realities of war that were still emerging from the chrysalis of Victorian era colonial warfare.
